Despite patient education and medical advancements, lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. In order to see if this high mortality could be reduced with screening imaging exams, the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) performed a study to compare chest x-rays and low-dose chest CT scans. In late 2010, the initial findings were released and later published in 2011 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study showed that patients who received low-dose CT scans had a 20% lower risk of dying from lung cancer.
