Bone Density (DEXA)
GENERAL OVERVIEW ABOUT THE EXAM
Also known as Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, or DEXA, bone densitometry is an imaging technique used to measure and monitor changes in bone density. The gradual loss of density weakens the bones and leads to fractures.
This condition is called osteoporosis. The cause of osteoporosis is multifactorial, and dietary habits and family history can contribute to the development of this disease. A DEXA scan can let patients know whether or not they have osteoporosis or if they are at risk for developing the disease.

What to Expect
Bone density scans are non-invasive and painless. You will lie on a table while a scanner moves over the areas of interest. A computer then determines the bone mineral density based on the relative absorption of a detector on the other side of the bone. Typically, the lumbar spine (lower back) and femurs (hips) are measured.
